The launch of the AFLW Inaugural Premiership was on Friday night and it kicked all the goals!!
Carlton & Collingwood went head to head, with Carlton taking out the match with a 35-point lead.
Carlton’s win was largely attributed to Forward Darcey Vescio from Wangaratta. Vesico was best on ground, single-handedly beating Collingwood’s team score. She will definitely be one to watch as the women’s league grows in certain popularity.
24,568 people filled Ikon Park to watch the clash, with AFL Chief Gillion McLachlan having to close the gates. 2000 spectators were turned away, but this didn’t stop them from trying to climb the fences in a bid to be part of the excitement.
With such fantastic numbers on the opening game it has pushed AFL bosses to consider moving the Grand Final to the MCG. With consideration, it could be played on the afternoon, the same night AFL Bombers and Hawks kick off their season.
While there were overwhelming numbers turning out to watch the game from the grand stands, there was an even greater audience tuning in to watch it on TV. A huge 896,000 people tuned in nationally to watch the broadcast on the Seven Network, Foxtel & Telstra. (You can be sure these network execs are patting themselves on the back, knowing they have secured themselves another hot commodity).
These ratings are set to continue when the next match of the AFLW opening round kicks off on Friday night with Adelaide taking on Western Bulldogs. Saturday night Carlton Vs GWS and Collingwood Vs Melbourne. Leaving Fremantle to take on Brisbane Lions on Sunday.
The 8-week AFLW season has only just begun and will be broadcast until the Final on March 25th, so if you would like to get your business in on the action, call us here at Sunny Media to find out how we can help!
